When fashion and food intersect, the result is a harmonic celebration of aesthetic and design.
Last month, we had the honor of participating in such an event when we hosted celebrated fashion designer, Jason Wu and an intimate group of his friends in our venue space and new home, Larkin Hall for the fifth installment of his GREY Dinner Series celebrating the fall launch of his GREY collection at Nordstrom.
The GREY Jason Wu Dinner Series is an extension of Jason’s passion for home entertaining and cooking, so it was important to his team that the evening feel intimate and interactive. To capture the essence of a summer evening spent with friends and speak to the celebration of life that is the inspiration behind the GREY collection, we proposed “A Midsummer’s Night Dream with Jason Wu,” playing to both the designed yet whimsical.
Our second floor Terrace Room, designed in collaboration with Studio K Creative (Monteverde, Balena, Girl and the Goat), presented the perfect backdrop for the evening. For the look, we partnered with Kehoe Designs on a lush, floral tablescape decor with café lights suspended over the dining table and touches of whimsical decor throughout the space. To further tie in with the collection’s fall patterns, Kara Gordon at Magnificent Milestones used one of the patterns as the border for the menu cards. The deep colors perfectly complemented the rich, floral tones of the tablescape and provided a creative sneak peek of the collection.
The night started with signature cocktails created by Blue Plate mixologist, Lov Carpenter, and various hors d’oeuvres passed on rustic wooden and sleek, clear lucite trays garnished with mini LED light strands and edible flowers and herbs.
For the five-course dinner, executive chef Paul Larson curated a completely custom, seasonal menu that incorporated both interactive and unique elements throughout. Dinner began with an unexpected “Peas and Carrots” amuse bouche, an heirloom carrot gelato with cracked freeze-dried peas served vertically in a bed of wheatgrass, followed by a Strawberry Gazpacho poured table-side.
For the second course of Pan Roasted Skate, guests were treated to an unexpected element of interactivity as the house-made “brown butter candle”—moonlighting as a part of the decor—was then used as the sauce to complete the course. For the entree, Chef Paul served a choice of Pan-Roasted Rack of Lamb with fresh morels and lamb tortellini and a vibrant Ruby Beet Risotto featuring roasted beets, shaved purple cabbage and bean sprouts. The evening was punctuated by a Hot Chocolate Dome, melted by a warm drizzle to reveal hidden components.
We were honored to have co-hosted the Jason Wu dinner series with the Nordstrom team. We were blown away by the culinary innovation, ingenuity and detail that our chefs and staff put forth to help make this a memorable and extraordinary event.
