2017 Chicago Food Trends

Chicago is known for its superb culinary scene, boasting top-notch restaurants, caterers, and chefs. This city is comprised of many innovative and creative leaders in the food industry who set new culinary trends.

  1. Breakfast Gets a Texture Overhaul

In 2017, breakfast foods with a different texture than the traditional ones are expected to become menu staples for this important meal. These new items won’t have the “smooth” texture like eggs and cooked cereal, but a crunchier one, with items like fried chicken and crispy chorizo appearing on breakfast menus. Our restaurant in the Loop, tesori trattoria & bar, is debuting its new brunch menu on Saturday, February 25. Check out their crispy Chicken Milanese with poached egg, fontina fonduta, arugula, and a touch of lemon.

Several restaurants throughout Chicago are mixing popular beers with hard liquor to create some unique and delicious beer cocktails. These are the perfect beverages for when you’re in the mood for some brew with a lively twist!

Yes, you read that correctly. According to Food Business News, goat may be the next big protein in restaurants across the United States. Goat is leaner than most meats – including chicken. Chicago’s own Girl and the Goat serves up a few goat dishes, including Goat Carpaccio, Goat Empanadas, and Goat Ribs.

Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K

Blue Plate will be catering a private VIP event for the upcoming Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. This annual road race, which will be held on Sunday, April 3, welcomes thousands of runners who look forward to continuing St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with a fun and lively run through the heart of Chicago.

About the Event

Now in its 37th year, the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K continues to be an extremely popular race among local runners, with more than ninety percent of Shamrock Shuffle participants being from Chicago and its surrounding suburbs!

This is a truly fun race that celebrates running in Chicago. Welcoming runners of all ability levels, from those running their first road race to those with plans to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in the fall, this event also hosts the popular Deloitte Team Competition at both the elite and non-elite levels.

Starting and finishing in Grant Park, the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K boasts a one-of-a-kind course, taking runners on a scenic our of downtown Chicago. The race concludes with live music at the traditional post-race party in Grant Park.

Blue Plate is excited to be involved in this Chicago race tradition! At the bank’s private VIP event, we’ll be serving a delicious menu consisting of:

  • A “Build Your Own Yogurt Parfait Bar”
  • A wide assortment of Artisan Sandwiches, including:
    • Corned Beef, Aged Swiss Cheese, Spicy Brown Mustard, and Creamy Cole Slaw on Caraway Rye Bread
    • Smoked Turkey Breast, Avocado, Cucumber, Alfalfa Sprouts, and Tarragon Aioli on Sliced Nine Grain Bread
  • And for dessert, a festive Shamrock Green Hand Painted Fondant Cookie

Blue Plate also has our own team running the race! We currently have over 150 participants on our team, made up of our employees and their friends and family.

To thank our team for their efforts and participation, we’ll have a special post-run celebration for them at tesori, a favorite Chicago restaurant. Each runner/walker on our team will also be presented with a custom-made medal and our very own Shamrock Shuffle T-shirt designed by our marketing team.

Bank of America Chicago Marathon Event


Every year, Blue Plate caters the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. We enjoy being a part of this highly energetic event, which will take place on Sunday, October 11.

Event History
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has been held annually in the fall since 1977. This year marks the 28th anniversary of the race.

The Chicago Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors, alongside the Boston, New York, London, Berlin, and Tokyo Marathons. While the Chicago Marathon has historically always been one of the largest road race marathons in the world, it has experienced an outstanding increase in the number of runners coming out to race since the very first race back in 1977, which had over 4,000 runners. Now the race is limited to 45,000 runners – a cap that is typically reached months prior to race day.

Exceptions to the limited registration of 45,000 runners are made for elite runners and charity representatives. And only runners who finish within six and a half hours are officially timed.

In order to participate in the marathon, runners either need to register after meeting the standard qualifying time or being selected through a general lottery.

The Course
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is known for being fast and flat, with many runners loving the absence of any notable hills. The course starts in Grant Park by Lake Michigan and goes through various neighborhoods within northern Chicago, leading all the way to the south side, then heading back to Grant Park. Marathoners enjoy taking in the scenic route, filled with the beautiful colors of autumn, and seeing diverse areas of the city.

Being such a popular event, the streets of Chicago become jam-packed with spectators every year – approximately 1.5 million – adding even more energy and excitement for everyone. Along the entire route, these enthusiastic spectators create a strong community of support and encouragement, cheering runners on.

ITU World Triathlon Grand Final & World Championships


Blue Plate to Cater ITU World Triathlon Grand Final and World Championships in Chicago

We’re excited to announce that Blue Plate will be doing hospitality and sponsor catering for the 2015 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Grand Final and World Championships. Chicago will be hosting this fabulous event from September 15-19, 2015.

Over the course of this four-day event, Chicago will welcome over 6,500 of the world’s top triathletes, who will be competing for world titles. The event will feature elite races, an aquathon, as well as top-flight sprint and Olympic-distance races. This is a great event to be a part of, as Chicago has never hosted this sporting event and it’s a qualifying event for the 2016 Olympics!

Blue Plate is looking forward to this opportunity to provide delicious and nutritious food for runners, athletes and spectators. Come out and cheer for your favorite athletes and, while you’re there, don’t forget to stop by our tents to say “hello” and fuel up.
